An album born in the classroom and brought to the stage
Samba and Beyond is the result of an educational project that took on a life of its own. Organized by Hamilton Pinheiro, the album emerged from an online course designed to teach Brazilian music to non-Brazilian musicians, with a special focus on accompaniment instruments. The course had a clear goal: to explore Brazilian rhythms through the lens of jazz-oriented interpretation.
To bring the lessons to life, each musician involved — Misael Silvestre (piano), Eudes Carvalho (guitar), Pedro Almeida (drums), and Hamilton Pinheiro (bass) — contributed original compositions. These pieces were recorded with care and artistic integrity, and quickly became more than just instructional examples. Students began requesting access to the songs outside the classroom, which led to the idea of releasing them as a full album.
The sound of Samba and Beyond is cohesive and intentional. Rooted in samba, the repertoire ventures through its many offshoots: partido alto, samba-funk, sambaião, and samba jazz. The arrangements reflect the technical mastery and musical sensitivity of each performer, navigating different rhythmic and harmonic textures with ease while maintaining room for personal expression.
More than just educational material, the album stands as an independent artistic statement. It merges pedagogy and performance, showcasing seasoned musicians united around a concept that extends beyond teaching — offering a genuine contribution to contemporary Brazilian instrumental music.
